Yuxuzox

We first became aware of the Yuxuzox in 3035. They inhabit the rainy planet Xuoxixiz in the Xubxi system. They are warlike, resilient, and nomadic.

The Yuxuzox make use of stone tools in a variety of contexts, including as weapons when hunting the wild yizyu.

Despite a few initial mishaps, the Yuxuzox have mastered the control of fire. They use it to cook their food, and to light their villages at night.

The Yuxuzox have begun to cultivate crops, including hoxi, a kind of hardy seedpod that grows well on the floodplains of Xuoxixiz.

The Yuxuzox have domesticated a species of small winged predators. The pets assist their Yuxuzox owners with hunting in exchange for food and shelter.

The Yuxuzox have discovered how to forge molten metal into jewelry, tools, weapons, and armor.

The Yuxuzox have begun to construct permanent dwellings and other structures. Wherever possible, they seem to prefer brick as a building material.

The Yuxuzox have built elaborate pipe and sewer systems to supply their larger settlements, such as Yiroz, with fresh water and a hygenic means of waste disposal.

The Yuxuzox have begun to watch the skies and recognize patterns in the movements of stars, which they use to navigate over great distances and keep track of time.

In 3268, many of the warring Yuxuzox clans were united under a single banner by an individual known as Yuzyu the Merciful. The resulting empire has its capital at Yiroz and rules over approximately 5% of the entire Yuxuzox population. Unusually for the Yuxuzox, it is governed by direct democratic vote.

The Yuxuzox have learned how to build ships and sail them across the oceans of Xuoxixiz to explore and trade over increasingly greater distances.

In 3322, the Yuxuzox population reached 25 million individuals. Many of these reside within permanent cities, the largest of which is known as Yiroz and has a population of 63,000.

The Yuxuzox have begun to construct wind and water mills, which redirect the forces of the natural world to perform repetitive mechanical tasks such as grinding grain and pumping water.

Due to its role as the birthplace of several major Yuxuzox religions, including the especially prominent Huixuzoz faith, the city of Yiroz is regarded by many of the Yuxuzox as a holy site. Leaders from all around the world make trips to the city in order to curry favor with the leaders of their people's religion of choice.

The Yuxuzox have learned how to catch water-dwelling creatures such as the yuyxi, which is now an important part of the Yuxuzox diet.

The Yuxuzox have developed a simple system of writing, which they use primarily for poetry.

The Yuxuzox have developed a sophisticated understanding of basic mathematics, such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.

Some of the Yuxuzox have begun to experiment with alchemy, systematically searching for new ways of combining and manipulating ingredients to yield useful chemicals, compounds, and medicines.

The Yuxuzox have discovered a way to manufacture gunpowder, which they primarily use for explosive mining.

The Yuxuzox have begun to make use of more sophisticated construction techniques, relying on sturdy structural elements such as arches and buttresses to support larger and larger buildings.

The Yuxuzox have developed a simple printing press, and mass-produced versions of important texts have begun to circulate widely throughout the world. Scary stories are especially popular.

The Yuxuzox have begun to use lenses and mirrors made from polished crystal, glass, and water to redirect and focus light.

Through systematic observation and categorization of the various living things on Xuoxixiz, the Yuxuzox have begun to develop a more sophisticated understanding of biology. Some theorists have even put forth the idea that dramatically different-looking organisms, such as the yizyu and the yuyxi, may in fact be descended from a single common ancestor.

The Yuxuzox have developed a practical and cost-effective steam engine, which can be fueled with wood or coal.

The Yuxuzox have successfully tamed electricity, and are now beginning to deploy it throughout society. Electric lights are widespread, electric motors are used to drive factories, and the growing need for electric power has led to the construction of power plants near every major center of Yuxuzox population.

In 3619, a rapidly growing religion known as Huixuzoz became the official religion of the largest Yuxuzox state. Adherents of Huixuzoz wear plain black hats to mark themselves as believers.

The Yuxuzox have begun harnessing the power of electricity to send messages across very great distances with unprecedented speed. Due to the overhead of encoding and decoding messages, long-distance communication remains far from instantaneous, but it is now possible for individuals on opposite sides of Xuoxixiz to exchange several messages over the course of a single day.

In their efforts to understand the motion of planets in the sky, free-falling bodies, and projectiles, the Yuxuzox have developed a new branch of mathematics which is immediately recognizable as calculus.

Although initially controversial, the hypothesis that diseases are caused by microorganisms has begun to catch on among the Yuxuzox, leading to the widespread adoption of public health policies which have greatly reduced the spread of disease.

The Yuxuzox have arrived at a sophisticated understanding of genetics, which has enabled them to craft new forms of life by deliberately modifying the genes of existing organisms.

With the development of the transistor, the Yuxuzox have begun to construct more sophisticated electronic circuits.

The Yuxuzox have begun to develop rockets.

The Yuxuzox have developed an accurate model of the internal structure of the atom, which has also enabled them to understand the phenomenon of radioactivity.

The Yuxuzox have begun to build general-purpose programmable computers.

The Yuxuzox have begun to understand quantum physics.

The Yuxuzox have discovered that electromagnetic waves may be used to transmit information, enabling the development and widespread deployment of media for audiovisual broadcasting.

The Yuxuzox have developed flying machines which can carry them into the skies above Xuoxixiz.

The Yuxuzox have begun to connect their computers into a single vast network, enabling communication and collaboration on a truly global scale.

The Yuxuzox have taken their first tentative steps into space, launching craft capable of supporting several individuals into orbit around Xuoxixiz before retrieving them safely.

The Yuxuzox have begun to experiment with the use of "intelligent materials", in the form of swarms of programmable nanobots.

The Yuxuzox have begun to establish permanent colonies on worlds other than Xuoxixiz. Although still largely unable to travel outside of the Xubxi system, the distribution of Yuxuzox civilization across multiple worlds greatly reduces the risk that they will collapse due to any crisis of merely planetary scale.

The Yuxuzox have developed a form of artificial general intelligence which rivals many of their own intellectual capabilities.

In 3816, following decades of negotiation, the various sovereign Yuxuzox nations came to an agreement concerning the establishment of a unified planet-wide government for all of the Yuxuzox.

The Yuxuzox have constructed their first cost-effective quantum computers, dramatically improving their collective ability to perform certain types of calculation.

Through their investigations of quantum phenomena, the Yuxuzox have discovered a means of sending and receiving messages which travel at speeds exceeding that of light itself.

The Yuxuzox have successfully tested their first faster-than-light starship. No longer are they trapped within the gravity well of the Xubxi system: they are now free to take their place alongside us as fellow wanderers among the stars.

In 3865, the Yuxuzox joined us.

The Ënoh make extensive use of stone tools for many things, including when hunting the wild omë.

The Ënoh have domesticated a species of small feathered creatures. The pets assist their Ënoh owners with pest control in exchange for food and shelter.

Due to the extreme effectiveness of stone tools in hunting omë, the Ënoh managed to hunt the omë species to extinction. Being reliant on the omë for food, the Ënoh then suffered a famine which brought about the end of Ënoh civilization.

This is a glitch, right? I mean they literally had agriculture before hunting.

Think about the Irish potato famine situation, just without the British.

In 3990, a swarm of self-replicating Náóá nanobots began to replicate uncontrollably, devouring vast swaths of Záóí at a rate which Náóá scientists had formerly deemed impossible. After several days of rapid expansion, the swarm seems to have become dormant, but not before consuming approximately 5% of the entire mass of Záóí and rendering Náóá civilization completely extinct 5% and they become extinct? is this a bug?

5% of the mass of a planet is a *lot*.Keep in mind it isn't talking about population. Not only that, but the nanobots likely traveled above ground, consuming all Náóá in their path.

Fcumfcoh

We first became aware of the Fcumfcoh in 2694. They reside on the dry planet Bamfbo in the Fbohfbom system. They are artistic, studious, and aloof.

The Fcumfcoh have begun to cultivate crops, including a kind of tough cactus known as flouo that grows well on the riverbanks of Bamfbo.

The Fcumfcoh make extensive use of stone tools in a variety of contexts, especially when hunting the wild fbuou.

The Fcumfcoh have domesticated a species of small winged predators. The pets assist their Fcumfcoh owners with hunting in exchange for food and shelter.

The Fcumfcoh have mastered the control of fire. They use it to cook their food, and to light their villages at night.

Due to the extreme effectiveness of stone tools in hunting fbuou, the Fcumfcoh managed to hunt the fbuou species to extinction. Being reliant on the fbuou for food, the Fcumfcoh then suffered a famine which brought about the end of Fcumfcoh civilization.

How did this happen? How did they die with agriculture to the extinction of animals they hunted? Is this a glich?

I just mentioned Epitaph again in an interview about our Fermi Paradox game and just want to post a thank you again for being an inspiration during the Fermi Paradox Jam <3

(+1)

Thanks so much! It’s been really exciting to watch your game starting to get some of the attention it deserves – hope the early access release is going well :)

I won!

The Vivihkru have successfully tested their first faster-than-light starship. No longer are they trapped within the gravity well of the Vuvuickru system: they are now free to take their place alongside us as fellow wanderers among the stars.

In 3732, the Vivihkru joined us.

I was directed to this game from a GDC talk by Heather Robertson.I finished the game after about 5 civilizations failed, what an awesome experience. I was invested in my little civ of Pibgu gently pushing them forward and egging them on. Worried when they began to develop their own dangerous technologies. I ended up copying the whole story to a text file and keeping it as a souvenir so i will remember the mighty Pibgu!

The Oveo have developed a simple system of writing, which they use primarily for record-keeping.

The Oveo have developed a simple system of writing, which they use primarily for worship.

Above is the result when you choose what to teach to a civilisation and you click at the same time they learn it.

Btw, STUPID WANDERING COMETS STOP GETTING LOST AND COLLIDING WITH MY CIVILISATIONS!!!

Great game! :P

(1 edit)

This game is pretty interesting; nice to play while you're reading something else... one question, though: on a global scale, wouldn't AI takeover simply mean that one advanced civilization was immediately replaced by another, except non-organic?

(+1)

This game is incredible.  I love it.  So many civilizations die though.  Yikes.  I've spent too much time on this.  Nice work.  I've got to put it down now.

So many wiping themselves out.  ARGH!

(+3)

I gave metal working to a civilization and then they immediately died to a war over metal deposits. Not even a year.

(+3)

"The city of Mu'naq has become renowed among the Afju as a center of commerce and trade. In particular, the fine fabrics produced there are highly sought after by traders around the world." There is a typo: renowned, not renowed. Other than that - absolutely brilliant.

(+1)

Nice catch – thanks for letting me know!

(+2)

No problem! I love the game, thanks so much for making it! My best civilization, the Afju, got wiped out by a genetically engineered virus in the year 3615. Dang... I shouldn't have taught them Genetics!

(+1)

I don't like the whole "slammed into an asteroid" maybe make that happen a bit later, when our civs actually have a chance against it.

(+2)

My biggest civilization wiped themself off the planet through a nuclear war! XD

(+2)

my longest civilization was the nopsjon they got wiped out by just a volcanic winter even though they already had invented FREAKING NUKES

(+2)

NUKES FOR GODSAKE

(+2)

That's nothing... I had a SPACE FARING civilization that got the "Your STONE TOOLS are so effective the so-and-so wild beast was hunted to extinction, causing the collapse of your civilization due to food shortages."  Come ON.  With genetics, computers, even just basic agriculture this species ditched their stone tools ages ago and had no reliance on hunting.  This is a BUG.  If it helps (either debugging, or players trying to survive), one unusual thing about this species is they never developed fishing.  So maybe that's the underlying cause.  Still, it's pretty unrealistic and should be fixed.  Only example I could find though, of totally blatant breaking of the suspension of disbelief... so thumbs up on an overall awesome game and one of my all time favorites in the genre!

When will there be an update? :D

(+2)

i got extremly lucky as the SECOND civilization i encounterd survived long enough to develop tfl travel and join me :D

I won woo!!!!!!!!

(+1)

all societies self destruct with fast advances in technology. If their technology is slow to progress, however, they become unsustainable and die out. Isn't there a way to research philosophy?

Nooooo!!!

The Pocpuc were almost there! Stupid AI with command control.

(+1)

What a great game! I really like the mix of a classic civilization game and the idle component.

The fostering of civilizations in parallel is really nice. I currently try a similar approach in my current prototype. ( http://twitter.com/FermiGame )

Im willing to use my time to test your game

That would be awesome, i think I will have a external build for alpha testing in the next months.

If you like send me your email to joergreisig@gmail.com and I write you something as soon as I have something testable.

My email is Wigan96@hotmail.co.uk - just to verify it iis me, I will copy and past your comment in the mail too that you just sent me :)

I will be looking forward to testing a build once it becomes available. Sorry, I have just seen this comment. I have been busy today

What do you do when a civilization joins you?

you've won, and welcome the species into the greater galaxy

Come on man, I hate you! The Uyumkauc were so close to FTL, and you killed them! It's pretty amazing how attached you can make me to a piece of auto-generated text.

Fuck.

This game has a lot of potential, I really like it! It only needs a UI upgrade and a downloadable form of the game, whether it is on PC or Mobile. The only complain about this game is how hard it is to keep up with old civilizations and young civilizations, I would suggest making them a tab that you can click on instead of a single file column

I loved this game so much!

However, there seems to be small bug: sometimes the clock just stops ticking and so the game stops updating and I have to refresh the page. It happened to me at 4747 and again at 4189.

RIP Hichwe, I'll miss your amazing civ =(

Hmm, I've never seen that one before! Mind letting me know which browser & OS you're using (including versions) so I can try to reproduce the issue?

(1 edit)

I'm using Opera 37.0.2192.105088 on a Samsung Galaxy S4 (gt-i9505) Android 5.0.1

Lovely game!

Link seems to load nothing but a blank screen - broken forever or just for now?

It should be back up now! Some browsers didn't like the way I was loading the Tone.js audio library over HTTP instead of HTTPS. I pushed a fix that seems to have resolved the issue, at least for me.

Seems to be working for me on my phone, presumably it's fixed on desktop too. Thanks, Max.

I just came here to say, this is an awesome game. Thank you for building this!

(-1)

Would be cool to download an EXE for this

(+1)

it's been about 3600 units and EVERYONE IS DEAD AND ONLY ONE GROUP TOUCHED SPACE.

...Is there any possiblity of an easy mode?

(+2)

This is a fantastic game! At first I was just idly checking it once in a while to see what kinds of things it would generate, but then one civ started doing well so I started paying really close attention and trying to help it out and guide it. I ended up feeling really attached to it. Being aware of other civilizations rising, falling, and being wiped out in the background while I all but ignored them to dote on my favourite was a very interesting experience, and really strengthened my emotional connection to the civ I was focusing on. Wonderful job on this, I plan to come back to play more later.

(RIP Ascat civilization, I was so proud of you)

I love this! hope you update soon and add new things such as new tech and behavior ?

(+1)

Thanks! I'm definitely planning to continue working on the game for a while – I'd especially like to add some of the planned events that I wound up dropping to get in before the jam submission deadline.

I would like to help you with ideas as much as I can, feel free to contact me whenever you like. Do you think you could tell me/us some of the things you would like to implement?

At the moment we're limited, which is okay for now but I had a few ideas which came to mind.

1. Ability to add your own civ you can influence, but you choose the traits/what planet they're on also star type and the name. (Some level of customization?)

2. Once a civ is successful and manages to colonize other planets, wouldn't it be cool if they could perhaps interact with one another in some way instead of just giving an option to allow the civ to 'join us' - notify players/watchers who are on this game about that.

3. The log gets a bit complicated after some time, more than 3 civs may pop up and may be over-whelming to control, would be cool to give us a choice to cap the amount of civs which can pop up if the player wanted.

4. More interactions :- Instead of just technology, what about a bonus event which you can choose every 5 years? for example. A new resource deposit has been found, (only show up if you have the gun powder tech) and that bonus could help speed up the civ growth or perhaps that would make them more greedy - cont:- the traits should perhaps change over time, with values going up or down which could help or destroy them in the end.

5. More events for each civ which could influence the growth or downfall of the empire. So like our real life civ - humans had what we call a quantum leap during wars or after it. Wars could lead to unification of the planet (World domination) or nuclear fallout (which you already implemented in some way)

6.Maybe more tech? New weapons - possible upgrades , if the civ upgrades the weapons, make it so that they could eliminate themselves or lead to the global dominance event (once discovered tools) - dont end it there either, global dominance is not always a bad thing, could speed up the time in which they could acquire new tech or build interesting structures or influence the civ to build monuments and so on

7 - simple idea, someone may of suggested it but perhaps you could give us the ability to clear civ logs to make it much easier to handle/delete existing civs if too many pop up.

8. Pause button would be cool, like I dont want my civ to die or something whilst..you know.. haha.

9. Give us more options to influence a civ, maybe becoming their God. If we type a certain word/command, we could encourage a civ to go for a specific tech or goal - allow us every so often - to type. Every 3-10 years? (civ would not have to listen to your command) if they dont....well...

comes to my next idea.

10. Powers/Disasters, There could be nothing better but to cause an extinction event - natural disasters- or maybe a disaster that only effects the civ for a short while but does not completely halt their growth.

11. Age of Civ/ Statistic page - Im sure you could go on and on with that one, probably a lot of effort to code and handle so I don't expect you to implement any of my ideas, but feel free to use your imagination on my ideas and I am sure, this urmm..simulator could turn into a bit of a civ management game or a god civ with some management to it. I dont know but what I do know it would add replayability

sorry for the massive text and some typos.

Some of which I just randomly came up with..

I love the concept and definitely something we can all work with. Would be cool if we set up a forum for suggestions to be made and perhaps gather a team in which we could help in terms of coding and programming. I don't know but it is just an idea but takes a lot of time. All of what I said probably would be difficult to implement but with tech and stuff improving and always changing, the only limit would be your creativity and imagination

Keep it up

Mrcheekymonkey1996

Chris.

I'm really enjoying this. Very simple but a great concept and very good execution. I've been playing for a while now.

(+1)

I really liked this, thanks, it was beautiful. Great work!

Some UI improvements:

  • stardate always visible, maybe fixed at the bottom?
  • separate the extinct as it can get pretty confusing with more than 1-2 civs
  • scrolling becomes distracting when you have a lot to manage, maybe prepend text, like a newsfeed, instead of append?
(+1)

Thanks for the feedback, and glad you liked the game!

  • I actually made the stardate fixed to the top of the screen last night, but didn't get around to updating the version of the game that's embedded on this page. Should be updated now.
  • Will look into separating the extinct civs and prepending text instead of appending ASAP. I especially like the idea of prepending – could make things substantially easier to follow.
